U.S. & Japan Discuss Airline Security

2010-03-12 11:56

United States Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano met with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on Friday. It comes a day before a gathering of Asian Pacific ministers in Tokyo on aviation security.

Meeting at the prime minister's office, Napolitano told Hatoyama there is much work to be done to secure airlines.

The meetings was prompted by the attempted bomb attack by a Nigerian man on a Detroit-bound flight on Christmas day last year.

U.S. President Barack Obama took responsibility for the security failures leading up to that incident and ordered for reforms and tighter coordination.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has claimed responsibility for the attempt. It was one of the most serious U.S. security breaches and intelligence breakdowns since the September 11 attacks.
