On Sunday, a former Indian prime minister journeyed to New Delhi with hundreds of farmers from the southern city of Bangalore. They’re protesting land acquisitions made by an infrastructure company, the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor project—also called the B.M.I.C.
[H.D. Deve Gowda, Former Prime Minister of India]:
"The problems of those who are suffering on account of so called project company, which is trying to grab as much land as possible, with the collusion of politicians, and with the collusion of some bureaucrats. The project company wants to loot. We wanted to raise the problems of suffering farmers on national level, at least now."
The former prime minister will lead a two-day protest with BMIC-affected farmers in front of parliament on Wednesday and Thursday. He will also meet with the speaker of the lower house of parliament.
Gowda alleges that the Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises Ltd.—the private company implementing the project—is not interested in completing the project.
He believes N.I.C.E. will sell the land that has been acquired for the project.
