An earthquake rattled Taiwan Thursday, injuring 11, stopping transport and causing minor damage and fires.

Residents of Kaohsiung County assessed the damage to their properties, after the powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake.

The roof collapsed in several parts of this man's house, littering the place with debris.

One woman said she was terrified when the earthquake struck.

[Unidentified Resident]:

"My heart is still beating fast now. I was just washing dishes and no one else was home. I was scared to death."

Around town the destruction was evident. A roof collapsed on a classroom at a local school after children were evacuated, while a wall fell at this temple.

The quake also set off five fires, including one at a textile factory.

Helicopters were used to drop extinguishers to help ease the flames.

Earthquakes occur frequently in Taiwan, which lies on a seismically active part of the Pacific basin, occasionally proving deadly as in 1999 when 2,400 people were killed.
