Toyota Motor President Akio Toyoda returned to Japan on Tuesday. He’s completed trips to the U.S. and China, trying to regain his company’s tarnished image after a series of worldwide recalls on its cars.
[Akio Toyoda, President, Toyota Motor]:
"I want people to know that Toyota, though not almighty, is not a company that runs away from or hides its fault, and it's so for all Toyota employees me included."
Toyoda takes the blame and says he’ll work to rebuild the company’s reputation.
[Akio Toyoda, President, Toyota Motor]:
"I'm responsible for all the problems. Regarding how I take my responsibility, I'd do it by implementing a lot of things to make the company re-born and become a totally new one."
Meanwhile, Japan's government said it would back the embattled automaker.
[Katsuya Okada, Japanese Foreign Minister]:
"This is not a problem just for Toyota but for the credibility of Japan, so the government will back-up Toyota as much as possible within its legitimate boundaries.”
Last week, Toyoda faced U.S. lawmakers over Toyota’s safety recalls. Faulty accelerators have led to some fatal accidents in the U.S.
Toyoda also apologized to Chinese consumers in China on Monday.
Toyoda says dealers have so far fixed more than 1 million recalled vehicles worldwide.
