Shutdown Continues in Indian Kashmir

2010-02-08 10:36

A shutdown in the Indian Kashmir region continued for the eighth consecutive day on Monday, following the killing of two teenagers blamed on paramilitary troops.

All shops, business establishments and government offices remained closed, and cars and other traffic stayed off the roads.

A young Muslim was killed last week, when police fired teargas shells to break up an anti-India demonstration.

A separatist organization called a shutdown following his death.

A teenager was also allegedly killed by security forces on Friday.

Authorities have set up security details at key places to stop violent protests.

A separatist leader and others have been placed under house arrest.

[Imtiyaz Ahmad, Local]:
"A curfew has been imposed by the government to prevent people from coming out of their houses to thwart the call for a march."

The rising tensions in Kashmir come at a sensitive time, coinciding with a spike in border skirmishes and violence by militant groups.
