Toyota Safety Recall Spreads to China

Toyota Motor Corporation extended its safety recall of RAV4 cars to Europe and China on Thursday.
The carmaker is recalling the vehicles due to concerns over a potentially dangerous accelerator pedal.
But Toyota cars still filed down Beijing's roads on Friday and not all car owners were worried by the warning.
[Xu Jiangdong, Toyota Car Owner]:
“The recall system is a responsible thing to do for a company's customers. But as for this accelerator problem, I've driven this car for a long time and I've never felt that there were any defects.”
Others believed Toyota's action was reassuring.
[Gao, Toyota Car Owner]:
"This accelerator pedal mistake is not good for driver safety because sometimes when you press the brake the car won't stop. But now they are recalling cars, so they are fulfilling their responsibility to drivers.”
All the cars being recalled in North America, Europe and China have pedals made by supplier CTS Corp.
The move comes as Toyota grapples with a patchy recovery from a vicious global industry downturn and growing competition.
China was the world's biggest auto market in 2009. The extended recall to China and Europe on top of some 6 million cars in North America is a further blow to the reputation of the world's largest automaker.
