Australians and Indians Unite on Australia Day

2010-01-26 10:52

Australians and Indians got together on Tuesday to celebrate Australia Day and India's Republic Day. The crowd gathered at a joint-music concert was held in Melbourne at the city’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

The concert was hosted by the Australia Day Committee in Victoria as a multicultural arts event, and was held in part to improve relations between Australians and the Indian community.

Recently, a series of violent attacks on Indian nationals caused a rift between Australians and Indians. Most of the attacks took place in Melbourne.

Australia Day commemorates the arrival of the first fleet from England under the command of Captain Arthur Philip. But the date and nature of the day continues to be debated.

India’s Republic Day marks the anniversary of India's permanent constitution when the country became a sovereign state in 1950.
