A local witness spotted a bomb planted along the roadside under an electric tower. It went off as the head of a police station in Peshawar drove by in his car.
[Arshad Aziz Malik, Eyewitness]:
"This blast took place at around 6:50am. It looked like someone had placed an explosive near an electric pole. As soon as the Station House Officer passed by near this pole, his car was hit. He was the apparent target. He was wounded in the blast. The blast was so loud that it was heard from far off areas. It shook the whole area."
The police officer, his driver and a child were injured.
Islamist militants have carried out a series of bomb attacks, most of them in the northwest, bordering Afghanistan, since the army launched an offensive in South Waziristan last month.
