The former head of Cambodia's notorious S-21 prison, Kaing Guek Eav, known
as Duch is charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity. He uses his final opportunity to address a joint U.N Cambodian court - to again say sorry – and seek forgiveness for the lives he destroyed.
[Kaing Guek Eav “Duch”, Former Head, S-21 Prison]:
"For the victims and the survivors of S-21 I announce that I alone take this responsibility for the loss of at least 1,380 people. All of them have received painful torture and inhumane treatment that cannot be measured. I still say sorry to those who died with my best regards."
Duch, who has since become a born-again Christian, expresses his remorse - and desire to be reconciled with the people of Cambodia.
[Kaing Guek Eav “Duch”, Former Head, S-21 Prison]:
“I promise that in the future, I will do whatever my people want. May the court please judge me based on your highest consideration."
But for some survivors, the pain of the past is all too real.
[Peo Seun, Khmer Rouge Survivor]:
"When I look at him, he looks pitiful but when I am reminded about his crimes, he can't avoid punishment. It is not revenge but it is because we were very miserable, myself, my family, mum and dad and my relatives."
Duch denies personally killing or torturing prisoners and says he was following orders in fear of his own life.
He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
