Security has been beefed up at major places in Mumbai City as a precautionary measure ahead of the first anniversary of the November 26th terror attacks.

Ten gunmen landed on the shores of Mumbai by boats at sunset on November 26, 2008 and fired at a busy railway station, a Jewish settlement, a restaurant and luxury hotels.

[Shivanandan, Police Commissioner, Mumbai]:
“If you recall the first explosion in 1993 serial blasts took place at the BSE. Mumbai being the commercial capital of the country and BSE is the heart of Mumbai. We are careful and I think nobody should be critical of that. It is a precautionary measure. We have also tightened security at other places like the Taj Hotel, Churchgate and the Andheri Railway Station.”

Several people were held hostage for the next three days… at least 166 people were killed.

The city has faced an onslaught of many serial blasts since 1993.

India has since suspended a peace process with Pakistan, blaming the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group for the attack.

Pakistan has acknowledged that the Mumbai attack was plotted and partly launched from its soil and has put seven suspects on trial.
