Assam on Alert After Blasts

2009-11-23 15:06

Indian television shows the scene of devastation in the immediate aftermath of a double bombing in the northeast Indian state of Assam.

At least six people are reported to have died.

Another 40 have been wounded in the attack in the town of Nalbari on Sunday.

The explosives were hidden in bicycles parked outside a police station and a shopping complex.

The attack came shortly after the Indian government announced safe passage for top rebel leaders willing to take part in talks to resolve a decades-old insurgency in Assam state.

Police have blamed the separatist United Liberation Front of Asom for the bombings.

They suggested it was in protest over the arrest of two faction members.

A senior member of the rebel group made a series of phone calls to local media to deny its involvement in the attack.
