Candlelight Vigil for Mumbai Terror Attack Victims

2009-11-18 8:45

The November 26th terrorist attack in Mumbai disturbed the small Jewish community living in Mumbai. And nearly one year later they’re still trying to heal the wounds from that tragic event.

[Rabbi Avraham Berkowitz, Director, Chabad Mumbai Relief Fund]:
"The pledge that we have taken today is that we could see that we have the solidarity of the faith communities and men and women of goodwill from all groups and all conditions, the security forces, the lawful government, all the communities, the other diplomatic representatives who were here with us, we know they are united people, millions and billions strong, united for peace, in solidarity of the victims that it should never happen again."

Members got together for a vigil at Nariman House in the city, one of 10 sites attacked by gunmen during the 60-hour siege.

Nariman House was home to the Mumbai chapter of the Chabad—Lubavitch Jewish movement.

The attack began when ten gunmen landed on Mumbai shores by boats and attacked multiple sites throughout the city. They fired indiscriminately at a busy railway station, a Jewish settlement, a restaurant and luxury hotels.

Several people were held hostage during the ordeal. At least 166 people were killed before commandoes sacked the last of the terrorists two days later on November 28th.

One gunman who claimed to be a Pakistani national was taken alive.

India suspended a 2004 peace process with Pakistan, blaming the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group, which is fighting Indian forces in Kashmir.
