Thai security forces have killed six suspected Muslim insurgents in the country's restive south during a gunbattle.

The clash came after police and soldiers surrounded a house in Kok Poh district after a tip-off about the whereabouts of the suspected militants.

Police said the gunbattle started as the suspected insurgents opened fire from inside the house on the officers, injuring two soldiers.

3,500 people have been killed in violence since 2004.

The region, which borders Malaysia, is getting more violent as Muslims fight for autonomy from Thailand's Buddhist majority. Attacks in the region are an almost daily occurrence.
