Ladakh, India: Heavy Snowfall Disrupts Normal Life

Heavy snowfall in India’s Ladakh region has disrupted normal life and left people stranded.

The entire region including has been covered with a thick layer of snow. And a major highway was closed to traffic for several hours.

[Moulam Gyato, Local]:
“It’s been snowing since yesterday… it hasn’t stopped yet. It's still raining and the roads are blocked. People are facing a lot of problems while walking on the roads.”

Roofs, treetops, as well as electricity and telephone poles, and roads, have all turned white.

[Gulam Mohammad, Local]:
“There is more snowfall than last year. Last year, there was no snowfall till November, but this year the snow has arrived earlier. Last year snowfall amounted up to six inches, but this year the snowfall ranges up to 8 to 10 inches.”

One-and-a-half feet of fresh snowfall was recorded.
