Senior Indian Security Officer Dies in Kashmir Blast

2009-11-17 9:13

A senior Indian security officer is dead after his Jeep ran over a landmine near Pakistan’s Kashmir region.

The officer was the deputy inspector general of the border guards and one of the highest ranking officers to have been killed in recent years in Kashmir violence.

Police are blaming separatist militants for the powerful blast. Three border guards were also wounded, but no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to an army spokesman, earlier on Monday two soldiers were killed while fighting a group of militants trying to sneak into Indian Kashmir from the Pakistani side.

Security officials say Pakistan-based militant groups have stepped up efforts to infiltrate into the region before winter snow blocks the Himalayan Mountain passes.

Pakistan has consistently denied its involvement in abetting the anti-India insurgency that has killed more than 47-thousand people since 1989.
