Maoist Rebels Kill Villagers in Orissa, India

2009-11-12 11:39

About fifty armed Maoists entered a village… killing four people. It all happened in the Rayagada district of India's eastern Orissa state on Wednesday the 11th. Maoists suspected those people to be informing police about the Maoists’ activities.

[Satyay Kondagiri, Brother Killed]:
"We were three brothers. In 2007 they killed my elder brother Anant Kondagir. We had lodged a case against them but the case was rejected due to lack of a witness. They were angry with us. Around 50 Maoists came to our house last night and knocked on our door. I ran away as I smelled danger. They dragged my brother outside and killed him there."

[Lanka Prakash, Relative of Another Slain Victim]:
"They ransacked our house and then locked it from outside. They dragged out my uncle and killed him on the road."

It is believed that the killing was against the recent police action against Maoists in the state. Police have put out an alert for the entire district.

The Maoist rebellion began four decades ago. The group has now spread to about 20 of India's 29 states, targeting police and government property in hit-and-run attacks.
