South Korea Protests Communist North

2009-11-11 10:16

The brief naval battle between North and South Korea on Tuesday the 10th caused a strong reaction among South Koreans. On Wednesday, more than 150 members of South Korean civic groups held a protest against communist North Korea.

[Park Chan-sung, Protest Leader]:

"We strongly denounce a North Korean ship's crossing over the Northern Limit Line. We urge the South Korean people as well as the South Korean Navy to smash North Korea's provocative activities immediately!"

Angry protesters criticized North Korea, burning flags and banners.

Navies from the rival Koreas exchanged gunfire for the first time in seven years Tuesday, damaging vessels on both sides… and raising tensions… just as U.S. President Barack Obama visits Asia.

The crossfire was triggered when a North Korean patrol vessel entered South Korean waters in the Yellow Sea… close to the spot where the two Koreas have had two deadly conflicts in the past decade.

North and South Korea are still technically at war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce without a peace treaty.
