Child Remains Trapped in Indian Well

2009-11-10 09:48

Work to rescue a four-year-old child in India's western Rajasthan who fell into a 200-foot deep well was in full force on Monday.

Sahil Singh slipped into a well when he was playing with his friends.

[Vishambar Lal, Additional District Magistrate, Jaipur City]:
"Children were playing here and out of curiosity they came close, and one child fell into the bore well. The moment we were informed about it all our officials came here to rescue the child."

The child’s father is being blamed for the incident because he removed iron pipes sealing the well.

[Seema Kanwar, Sahil’s Mother]:
"What else can I say I just want my child to be safe."

This is not the first case of a child falling into an uncovered manhole in India.

In March 2008 authorities rescued a two-year-old girl in Agra, who accidentally fell into a 45-foot well in Tehra.

In a similar incident, a five-year-old boy fell into a 53-foot deep and 1.5-foot wide shaft in Haryana in July 2006. The army got him safely from the pit after more than two days of rescue operations.
