Russian Bolshoi Ballet Features Student Dancers

2009-11-09 01:04

An unusual premiere at Moscow's Bolshoi theatre.

The troupe this time is not Bolshoi's own, but 10 to 17 year-old ballet students from the Moscow State Choreographic Academy.

On offer, "La Fille mal Gardee", first performed in 1789.

It's one of the oldest ballets, but for the production's choreographer, it's only fitting that the youngest dancers take the stage.

[Yuir Grigorovich, Choreographer of "La Fille Mal Gardee"]:
"It is probably the oldest ballet being shown on world stages and the best for  the youngest dancers, still at school or in their last year. In a few months many will be dancing in the Bolshoi theatre troupe."

16-year-old Anastasia Soboleva, winner of the Moscow International Ballet Competition, has the leading role.

[Anastasia Soboleva, Moscoe State Choreography Academy Student]:
"When rehearsing elements separately ten times, everything works out, but performing them all together or having to come on stage after dancing the whole ballet to do fouette turns or other difficult parts that's the hardest."

Comedy, grace, and most importantly skill are ingredients of the performance.

Practice and hard work have got them there and some will undoubtedly go further.
