U.S. Delegation Wraps up Burma Visit
2009-11-5 11:21
The U.S. visit to Burma comes as part of a new engagement policy by the Obama administration.
The delegation met with senior junta officials, ethnic groups, the National League for Democracy and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Suu Kyi has been held captive by the junta for 14 of the last 20 years.
The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State says elections next year would not be legitimate without the involvement of the detained opposition leader.
[Scot Marciel, Deputy Asst. Secretary of State]:
"If that it is not the full inclusive process that includes the participation of the party and the party that won the vast majority of the vote in the last election. It's very hard for me to see how it would be credible."
The National League for Democracy has yet to confirm whether it will participate in the polls.
