Fiji Orders Australian & NZ Envoys Out

2009-11-04 10:21

Fiji coup leader and self appointed Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama, has ordered Australia and New Zealand to recall their envoys from the country, accusing them of interfering with internal affairs.

Bainimarama is bringing new judges from Sri Lanka, after a Fijian court declared his government to be illegal and he sacked the country's judiciary.

The new judges would need to travel through Australia or New Zealand to reach Fiji, which Bainimarama says the two nations are preventing.

[Frank Bainimarama, Self-appointed Prime Minister]:
"The Sri Lankan judges who have been appointed to serve on the Fijian judiciary were told that they would not be able to travel through or into Australia because they had taken these positions."

Australia and New Zealand have placed travel bans on members of Bainamara's government, but they reject charges they have refused visas for the judges.

Bainimarama said Australia and New Zealand must recall their envoys within 24 hours.

[Frank Bainimarama, Self-appointed Prime Minister]:
"It is for these reasons ladies and gentlemen that I have told the Minister of Foreign Affairs to issue communications that their respective heads of commissions are to be recalled within 24 hours.

Bainimarama, who promised and then cancelled an election for this year, was re-appointed as prime minister in April, less than two days after the High Court ruled his coup and subsequent government to be illegal.

The former British colony has been wracked by ethnic divisions ever since gaining independence in 1970, suffering four coups and a bloody military mutiny since 1987.
