North Korea Could Produce Another Nuclear Weapon

Tensions are growing over the North Korean nuclear program again. The country’s state news agency says 8,000 fuel rods have been reprocessed at its Yongbyon nuclear plant. The material can provide enough plutonium to make at least one more atomic weapon.

Experts say that the North already has enough material to make six to eight nuclear weapons.

The announcement comes as North Korea sends mixed signals to the international community about the future of its nuclear program.

Last week, a North Korean official made a rare visit to the United States. Some say that North Korea is in desperate need of financial aid.

North Korea would have to make concessions in the nuclear dealings if it wants aid. But leader Kim Jong-il would unlikely give up his nuclear program.

On November 2nd, North Korea called for direct talks with the United States… and indicated that it was ready to return to nuclear disarmament talks.

The Yongbyon plant also houses an aging reactor and makes fuel to burn in the reactor.
