Boat Sinks in Indian Ocean

2009-11-2 12:53

And today a boat has sunk near the remote Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean. Around 40 people were reported on the board at the time. A merchant freighter in the area has picked up half of the survivors.

Search and rescue teams from Australia flew to the area to look for the remaining passengers and crew.

It’s unclear where the sunken ship was heading or whether it was carrying asylum seekers.

Australian authorities have already been forced to make a number of rescues this year.
