Typhoon Mirinae Slams into Southern Luzon, Philippines

2009-10-31 15:30

Filipinos braced themselves as Typhoon Mirinae slammed into the region.

It's the third typhoon in just over a month to hit the main island of Luzon.

The strong winds and heavy rains uprooted trees in Cavite Province bringing down power lines.

The country's National Disaster authority said more than 110,000 people have fled the typhoon's path.

[Luisito Alix, Novaleta Disaster Coordinating Council]:
"The problem for these residents who we evacuated is that sometimes typhoons can bring really big waves that can destroy their homes."

For some, it was too late, their homes have already been destroyed.

[Coastal Resident]
"The wind is really strong. We're helpless, we can't do anything. Our house has collapsed."

The torrential rain has forced the authorities to cancel more than 100 flights from Manila.

Many remain stranded in areas as ferries and buses were also cancelled, stopping them from heading back to their homes to celebrate All Saints' Day.

Part of the clear up operation is already underway.

The typhoon is expected to head towards Vietnam by Sunday.
