The aftermath from a brazen attack on a Pakistani brigadier in the capital, Islamabad.

Pakistanis have, sadly, grown used to bomb blasts and even attacks on military posts.

But gunmen on a motorcycle shooting and killing an army brigadier and his driver in broad daylight is unusual.

It's not clear who's responsible for the attack, but it comes as the army launches an offensive against militants in their stronghold in South Waziristan along the Afghan border.

Analysts say the offensive is expected to take weeks.

The country's on high alert amid fears of retaliatory strikes by militants.

And not just in the Waziristan region - but in other cities too.

On Tuesday a suicide bomber attacked an Islamabad university, killing at least four people.

As a result, authorities ordered schools and colleges across the country to close.

Pakistan's media and public generally back the offensive, but after the order to close schools, panic is spreading.

And anger over the attacks.

About 200 student supporters of a major Islamic party demonstrated in Pakistan's other city, Karachi, condemning Tuesday's university attack.

Most bombs and shootings in urban centers could begin to test the public's patience.
