81-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest-reigning monarch, has been in hospital since September 19… admitted with fever, fatigue and a loss of appetite.

A palace official says the king's health is returning, but added that he would still need treatment after he leaves.

Crowds of well wishers came from different provinces each day to the Bangkok hospital where the king has been treated, to sign get-well books and pray for his health.

[Sunisa Poomrueng, Well-wisher]:
"I looked for where the king is treated and wished for him to recover soon. When I watched the news, I also made a wish for his speedy recovery and to be healthy."

The king's disappearance from public view has raised concern in largely Buddhist Thailand where many of his subjects regard him as semi-divine.

He is highly revered by his people, who have lived under his 63-year reign.

[Somboon Sirirulpong, Well-wisher]:
"The king has been working for us for many decades since I was a child. In my memory, I always see him working. We, all Thais, are worried about his illness. I hope he will recover soon."

The health of the king is followed closely in financial markets, in part because of concerns about succession.
