A day before the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, his followers held a peace march in India's northern Srinagar city.
Members of the All India Creative Society assembled in the heart of the city and held a peace march to kick off the three-day Gandhi Jayanti celebrations in the Kashmir Valley.
[S. P. Verma, Secretary, All India Creative Society]:
"We will hold a peace march, form a human chain, hold all-faith prayers and will pay tribute to Gandhi. All these aim at sending a message of peace. We pray for peace and prosperity for the people."
Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 and is known for peaceful and non-violent political opposition ideology.
Recently US President Barack Obama said that Mahatma Gandhi is his ideal and “real hero.”
Celebrating the anniversary of the messenger of peace holds a special significance in the Kashmir Valley. The region has been torn by two decades of militancy, although recent months have seen a relative calm in the region.
