60 Years of Oppression: Tibetan March
2009-10-01 11:37
Tibetan exiles living in India held a protest march on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Communist Party’s takeover of China.
Carrying banners, placards and their national flags, Tibetans march down the winding streets of Dharamsala. They say the last 60 years have been filled with oppression.
[Dolkar Lhamo, President, Tibetan Women’s Assoc.]:
"They (Chinese) are celebrating this occasion very happily over there but regarding the Tibetan issue, the situation inside Tibet till now, what they have done regarding environment destruction, regarding our religion, this we are celebrating the 60 years of Chinese oppression."
The communist regime is accused of ruling Tibet with an iron fist since occupying the region in 1950.
Critics have accused China of repressing Tibetans' religious aspirations, especially paying homage to the Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
