Mass Resignation of Government Doctors in Bangalore, India
2009-9-30 10:55
The 4,000 plus doctors who resigned en masse were recruited by India’s State Health Department to work in government hospitals. They haven’t stopped working yet, but may if the situation doesn’t change, which could spell disaster for patients.
They are looking for more money as well as more clear-cut promotions.
[Dr. Shail Kumar, Karnataka Government Medical Officers Assoc.]:
"They (Government of Karnataka) have not taken any issue seriously because two years back only, we submitted this memorandum to the government. Government (has) not initiated any action regarding this. So the government has to address the problem of the people.”
The doctors rejected an appeal by the state's chief secretary to wait until October 4th to resign.
They instead handed in their letters of resignation to Director of Health and Family Welfare Department who says he will forward them to the state’s chief secretary.
The doctors will stop working en masse on October 15th if their demands are not met.
