Flight Deadlock in India
2009-09-10 11:06
India's Jet Airways pilots are on strike over the sacking of four of their colleagues. So far, it’s forced the airline to cancel 200 flights, with no end to the standoff in sight.
More than half of the airline's 760 pilots are on a "sick leave strike." They’re not allowed to officially strike without telling the airline's management beforehand, so they’ve all called in sick instead, since Tuesday, September 8th.
The flight cancellations have affected at least 14,000 passengers. Many are waiting long hours at the airport to find out what’s going on.
[Manoj Subramanium, Jet Airways Passenger]:
"I had a 10:40 flight to Ahmedabad by Jet Airways. Now I got an SMS at night around 12:30 saying the flight is cancelled due to whatever problem they are having and we will be taken care of. But now, I've come to the airport, I don't know whether I'm going to Ahmedabad. My meeting is going to happen or not? What is going to happen? There is absolute chaos here."
Some of the passengers complain of exploitation from other airlines. Passengers with important conferences on had to pay up to three times as much for their ticket.
[Rajshri, Stranded Passenger]:
"They never informed that the flight will be canceled. We were hearing in news and media that the flights will not run. So the problem is, we pay three times the cost in other airlines and also wait still one whole day for the meeting. It’s really problematic and I wish there should be some contingency plan, which airline should take care of. Such that the other airlines should not also exploit us. Just because we've got boarding of Jet Airways, the other airlines are exploiting us for same sector."
We will continue to follow this story, and will bring you the latest updates on the strike, as= they become available.
