Earthquake Warning for Northeast India
2009-8-27 10:38
Scientists fear that a big earthquake is brewing and might hit India's northeastern Assam region soon.
[Prof. Surjya Kanta Sarmah, Guwahati University]:
"Since there is no method...accurate method of prediction of earthquake. It is difficult to say whether a big earthquake will be coming soon or in the near future. But our study shows that a big earthquake is due in this region. We have used a model, which is called a model. According to that model, a big earthquake should occur in this region within a short time."
Two consecutive earthquakes measuring below five on the Richter scale shook Assam last week. Builders in the city are taking all precautions possible to avoid a collapse.
[Biswajuti Bora, Builder]:
"Since Assam falls under zone 5 - 6, so we have to take extra precautions in constructing buildings. Most of the buildings here are earthquake resistant."
The major worry among scientists is that Assam is seated on the highly volatile seismic zone five. Among all the earthquakes that Assam has experienced, the earthquakes of 1897 and 1950 are among the ten biggest earthquakes in history. Study's reveals that Assam records major a earthquake every 50 years, the last being in 1950.
