Water Woes for Mumbai, India

2009-7-7 11:35

Residents of Mumbai, India face hardship as the city's civic authority dropped the city’s filtered water supply by 30 percent.

The officials say that with dropping water levels in Mumbai’s reservoirs, it’s impossible to keep pace with the city's water demand.

Water supplies to swimming pools and five-star hotels are also being reduced.

Almost all the residents in the middle class neighborhoods are very tense from the situation.

[Geetu Chandok, Housewife]:
"I'm not getting water and we have to go long distances to fetch water while the BMC is saying that this is happening due to the excessive rains. Our water drums are completely dry. And this is the condition of the neighbours, even their taps are dry."

Another resident says that can’t wash clothes, bathe and had to go out late at night looking for water from public taps.

[Ismail, Mumbai Resident]:
"We are not getting enough water. Water is available from 7 to 10 in the morning but even during this scheduled time there is not enough water. We are facing a lot of problems due to this. We cannot wash our clothes or take a bath, and worst of all, the children are facing a lot of problem too. We go out in search of water as late as 11 at night."

Officials say that despite heavy rains last week the catchment areas of the city's six lakes didn’t get the amount of water that could lessen the water woes for the city.
