Indians Continue Protests in Sydney

Content:Last night hundreds of Indian students took to the streets in Sydney to protest against attacks they say were made by ethnic Lebanese-Australian gangs. The students are also protesting what they claim is lack of protection by Australian police.

Protester Anand Patel says he was attacked.

[Anand Patel, Protester]:
"There were around ten Lebanese people and they just, they were in the cars and they were fully armed with the baseball bats and stuff like that. And this thing happens in front of police."

The police made two arrests during the protest and one man has been charged.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd spoke about the attacks and warned against vigilante action.

[Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd]):
"It's unacceptable for anyone to commit an act of violence against any student of any ethnicity anywhere in Australia."

Victorian Premier John Brumby says the crimes were racially motivated and has assured the public that there will be a crackdown with uniformed policemen and covert operations.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is urging the media to be responsible and to keep in mind the interests of thousands of Australian of Indian origin staying in Australia.
