Thousands of Mexicans Munch on the Kings' Cake

Thousands of Mexicans gathered on Wednesday to enjoy a piece of one of the country's tastiest traditions: a mammoth King Cake provided by the municipal government for the New Year and ahead of the Three Kings Day.

The behemoth pastry measured a staggering 740 meters in length and weighed over 10 tons.

Now in its fifth year, the King's Cake celebration in Mexico City's famed Zocalo Square honors the Three Kings' visit to the newborn Jesus.

One Mexico City resident said the massive cake represents an important tradition for many families.

[Unidentified Mexican Woman]:            

"I think it's good that it takes place every year and that the tradition is not lost for people who can't afford to buy cake - they are able to come here and eat some. Sometimes one has no money and this is an opportunity to come and eat it."

[Elizabeth Hernandez, Mexico City Resident]:

"The cake represents the arrival of the Three Kings and it brings presents. The slicing of the cake allows us to sometimes get together as a family on the day of the Candelaria."

More than 2 thousand bakers participated in preparing this year's tasty treat.

The recipe called for enormous amounts of ingredients including more than 2,323 pounds of fruit, over 5,720 pounds of sugar and 1,320 pounds of marmalade.
