Italian historian and writer, Gabriele Nissim, is visiting Prague to promote an idea - a European Day of Remembrance for “the Righteous.”

It’s to commemorate those who have had the courage to risk their lives in saving others during the times of totalitarianism - be it during Nazi or communist times.

[Gabriele Nissim, Proposal Initiator]:
“People who struggle against totalitarianism, defend others, save lives - these people are the hope of humanity because they show one very important thing; that one man can always make a difference.”

A proposal of declaration for the European Day of Remembrance has been presented in the European Parliament.

So far, over 50 Parliament members have signed.

Former senator of the Czech Parliament, Daniel Kroupa, says The Day of the Righteous should focus on those people righteously resisting totalitarian regimes in present times.

[Daniel Kroupa, Former Senator]:
“It plagues me that in many places of the world, there are still situations where people live under very similar conditions to how we did in the time of totality, and that the democratic, free world care about them as little as they cared about political prisoners in the 1950’s. If the Day of the Righteous should have a meaning, it must shed light on these righteous people.”
