A 24-hour strike by drivers on London's underground railway network caused disruptions on Monday, but savvy shoppers looking for Boxing Day bargains managed to avoid much of the delays.

Industrial action from the union Aslef stemmed from a dispute over the union's demand for extra pay for its members working on Boxing Day public holiday.

However, retailers in the British capital's prestigious West End shopping district reported brisk trading on Boxing Day - one of the key dates in the year for the sector - and added that a London tube strike had not made much of a dent to their business.

Boxing Day on December 26 is when British retailers hope to attract as many customers as possible by offering knock-down prices to goods after Christmas.

Flagship stores around Oxford Street in London's West End were packed with shoppers.

This year's sales have been marred by the strike on London's underground transport system, but Transport for London (TFL) says more services than predicted were operating.

However, it warned travelers to expect disruption.
