Several Chinese media outlets have reported that Chongqing Communist Party Secretary Bo Xilai has offered to resign from the Politburo. The Politburo is a 25-member committee that represents the second-highest level of leadership within the Chinese Communist Party. Bo Xilai's political future has been troubled since his right-hand man, former police chief Wang Lijun, tried to declare asylum at the US Consulate in Chengdu two weeks ago. The Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy first reported Bo's resignation, quoting an inside source. Before the Wang Lijun incident, Bo had been seen as a likely candidate to be promoted to the top level of leadership within the Party.
