On Monday, the Chinese regime warned local officials in Tibet that they could lose their jobs or face criminal prosecution if they fail to maintain stability in the region during this current politically sensitive period. The warning comes just days after three more Tibetans set themselves on fire on Friday in Serthar in China’s southwest Sichuan Province. It is the latest in a series of self-immolations over the Chinese regime’s oppressive rule—bringing the total number to at least 19. Serthar is one of the three regions where Chinese troops opened fire on unarmed protesters two weeks ago—killing at least 12 Tibetans. Amid mounting unrest and as the Tibetan New Year approaches on February 22, local authorities stated neglect of responsibility would be severely dealt with. Officials announced on the Tibetan regional government website on Monday, (quote) "Those responsible for problems in stability maintenance because they neglect their posts, act irresponsibly…or fail to carry out their duties...will all be removed from their positions on the spot, no matter who they are or what level they are at."
