At the start of a three day visit on Thursday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged China to use its influence and persuade Iran to give up its nuclear program.

Merkel is expected to make the case for tighter sanctions on Iran, originally proposed by the US and designed to prevent the nation from developing nuclear weapons.

She said she has already had long discussions with CCP leader Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao over Iran sanctions.

[Angela Merkel, German Chancellor]:
"I will advocate that, if Europe for example imposes sanctions (on Iran), that China still uses the influence it has to tell Iran that we do not need and cannot allow another power with nuclear weapons."

Chancellor Merkel says she hopes the UN Security Council can pass a unanimous resolution on the matter.
