Protesters Resist Mosque Demolition in Northwest China

Reports are now emerging about a protest in the northwestern town of Hexi on Friday. Hundreds of Muslims turned out to try to stop police from tearing down their mosque. According to reports, authorities had said the mosque was illegal. The protesters, who were members of the Hui ethnic minority, fought with the 1,000 or so police officers sent to carry out the demolition. According to the Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy, about 50 protesters were injured and more than 100 were arrested. The mosque was demolished after the clash.
