Annual Bullock Cart Race Kicks-Off in Southern India

The annual bullock cart race marks the harvest festival and the 63rd Republic Day in Dindigul district of southern Tamil Nadu state.
The race, which began almost a week ago, attracted hundreds of bullock cart enthusiasts vying for the top prize.
[Selvaraj, Organizer of the Bullock Cart Race]:
"More than 200 pairs of bulls from Theni district, Madurai district and other districts of south Tamil Nadu are taking part in the event. We’ll give out a cash prize of Rs 25,000 and eights grams of gold to the first winner, and the other six winners will also receive cash and gold prizes."
Using bamboo sticks to prompt the bulls to pull the carts faster, riders exchange places at various intersections to give one another a breather.
