On Tuesday, Tibet's parliament-in-exile set up a committee to decide on the Dalai Lama's decision to quit active political life.

The prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile says a committee will discuss the situation today and submit a report to parliament.

[Samdhong Rinpoche, Prime Minister, Tibetan Government-in-Exile]:
"They have set up a committee, a small committee, to submit a plan on how to deal with it.”

About two weeks ago, the Dalai Lama announced that he would step down as Tibet's political leader.

Members of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile, which functions from Dharamsala in India, want the Dalai Lama to stay.

By transferring his powers, the Dalai Lama would give the prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile greater power, as the region seeks autonomy from China.

The Dalai Lama says he’d like Tibetans to take the real course of modern democracy.

The Dalai Lama will remain Tibet's spiritual leader and continue to advocate what he calls “meaningful autonomy” for Tibet.

The Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 after the failed uprising against Chinese rule.
