STORY:
Police secure checkpoints and redirect traffic... as more than 100 world leaders gathered for the 63rd session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The General Assembly opened against the backdrop of the financial crisis in the U.S. and marks the first major international meeting since Russia sent troops into Georgia last month.
Outside UN headquarters, protesters gathered to demonstrate against President George W. Bush, Iran's nuclear aims, and China's handling of Tibet.
While inside, representatives of some of the UN's 192 members presented their agendas at the podium.
Whether world leaders can come together over the next several days is up for debate.
