Australians Visit Fire Crime Scene

2009-02-14 09:44

Residents of Marysville have been taken back to visit what remains of their once-picturesque Australian hamlet.

It's been declared a crime scene after bush fires still burning in the state of Victoria wiped out what was a tourist magnet.

Up to 100 people, a fifth of its entire population, are feared to have died.

"That's what the worst thing was, seeing my grandpa's car because that's where he was found, right beside it, and that's where I cracked."

"I think the going back has been incredibly important.  I couldn't have stood and watched it burn."

More than 180 people are now known to have lost their lives in Australia's worst natural disaster in over a century.

The fires are still burning and it could take another two weeks before they will be finally out.

On Friday a man was charged with starting one of the fires and is due to appear in court next week.
