Guangzhou Residents Protest High Voltage Building Project

WONG:
"Not in my neighborhood." That's what residents of the Royal Ascot Garden community in China's Guangzhou City are saying about an electrical transformer station that's being built near their homes.

The roughly 40,000 residents of the community are at odds with local Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials over construction of the 1.1 million-volt Royal Ascot Transformer Station.

They say the station will be too close to their homes and schools, and they fear being exposed to cancer-causing electromagnetic radiation. They allege that the station will come within 16 feet of some homes and within 60 feet of a school.

Residents' peaceful protests have been met by riot police. They say their repeated appeals to local officials have been ignored.

When construction of the station resumed on December 30 of last year, residents showed up to protest—and they were met by nearly a thousand armed riot police. Eight people were arrested.
