And Hong Kong lender Bank of East Asia is denying local rumors questioning its stability. It comes after hundreds of people lined up to withdraw funds at local branches across the city.

People waited calmly in lines which snaked from inside to outside and along sidewalks. Some joined in queues simply because they saw others doing so, while others had telephone calls from worried family and friends.

"I just joined when I saw people queuing up. I don't know why."

Bank of East Asia is a well respected and long standing Hong Kong bank.
