Swedish Festival in London Goes Green

In celebration of Sweden’s presidency of the EU, the "Sweden on stage" festival in London offers a taste of Sweden by featuring various Swedish Musicians as well as promoting environmentally sustainable activities.

[Steve Marsh, Woodland Trust]:
“We are here today because obviously we care about trees and woodland for the UK, since Sweden has now taken over the Union Candidacy, their big push is on climate change, and climate change is the biggest threat to what we call ancient woodland”

Recycling cartons and using more materials with a low carbon footprint is encouraged in the festival.

[Richard Hands, Tetra Pak Environmental Manager]:
“I hope this event will bring a little part of Sweden to this part of London. But in terms of the carton and our message to people, I very much hope that people will realize that the carton is very much recyclable in this country, they will squash them as in the messages behind me here, they will put them in their local recycling system, and we can make sure that together we can work the best for the planet”.

As well as recycling, art can also be made ecological. Here a Swedish Moose is being built with willow withies.

[Sara Holmes, Willow Artist]:
“I just love working with natural materials and it’s working with the environment creatively and I just think its wonderful to be teaching children that as well.”

And if you would like a cup of tea after all this, Electric Pedals offers an eco-friendly solution.

[Tim Siddall, Electric Pedals]:
“Today we are boiling a one kilowatt kettle using 12 bikes and we are only boiling one cup of water at a time and as you see 12 people pedaling. Its about all we can manage is to boil one cup of water. It takes a lot of energy to boil water”.
