WONG:
Japanese aren't the only ones getting their groove on today. That's because there's a new dance in the

Philippines called the 'Papaya,' that's sweeping the Southeast Asian nation. Some are even saying it's the Philippines' answer to the Macarena. Here' more.

STORY:
Move over Macarena, make way for Papaya! The new dance craze has simple steps—a little 'clap clap,' a little 'shuffle shuffle,' and 'point your fingers in the air!' And it's got everybody and their grandmother dancing along.

[Edu Manzano, T.V. Host]:
"The song just kinds of tickles people in the right way."

It began as a gimmick on the T.V. show 'Are You Game,' where a correct answer may signal the whole audience to stand up and dance.

[Edu Manzano, T.V. Host]:
"It brings a glint through your eyes, a smile to your face, and a kind of sway to your hips.”

Manzano also said the craze reflects Filipinos' fun-loving attitude despite political turmoil, economic strains, and natural disasters.

Ricky Albot mans the fruit and vegetables section of
Manila's SM Hypermarket.

[Ricky Albot, Fish Stall Attendant]:
"It calls attention to us. And when we get a bit tired from work, the dance helps us relax."

The dance is so contagious that the Hypermarket chain has made gyrating to the Papaya part of their staff's daily routine.

[Josie Agtas, Shopper]:
"It's fun, they're an added attraction to grocery shopping."

Across the
Philippines, the dance has inspired groovers in unlikely locations, including a church, an embassy, a jail, and at least one tourist resort.

[Rey Fuentes, Resort Manager]:
"When we started to share it to people from
London, from Germany, we saw that it clicked. There's a special something. So everybody does it."

We'll keep you updated on this cultural phenomenon.
