CHEN:
On Sunday, Indonesia celebrated Children's Day. This year it focused on caring for nature and the environment. Our team in Jakarta met up with the kids.
STORY:
About 200 children from different schools in Jakarta met with Jakarta's governor, Fauzi Bowo. Although young, they asked about the world's economy, natural disasters, and poverty.
[Fauzi Bowo, Jakarta's Governor]:
“Both parents and government must make an effort to help the children. I'm trying to work with many different NGO's. It is very clear that the children need a lot of attention from the government.”
Next, each child was given a tree to plant as part of a program called "One Child - One Tree."
[Azas Tigor, Indonesia Children's Day]:
“We talk about the environment because we see that children are the city’s future. They are earth’s future, they are life's future."
The Indonesian government continues to struggle with poverty. It is estimated that about five million Indonesian children cannot afford going to school.
