Toxic Chinese Dumplings

Dozens of Japanese have fallen ill after eating contaminated dumplings from China. The food was found to contain some form of pesticide.

STORY:
According to Japanese TV around 80 people in Japan have complained of getting sick from eating food made in China. Restaurants and schools have taken Chinese-made food off their menus.

But there are few reports on the issue in most of China's domestic media.

The food scare has triggered a probe in Japan into possible additional cases of food poisoning.

[Nobutaka Machimura, Chief Japanese Cabinet Secretary]:
"I don't want to think that there is any difference among countries concerning food safety, but it seems there was a sense on the Chinese side that 'this is probably ok'."

The importer of the dumplings, JT Foods Company, will recall the frozen dumplings and other food made at the same Chinese factory.

Some consumers are in shock, while others are upset.

[Masumi Okubo, Housewife]:
"I cannot believe in anything anymore."

[Kazuo Nakabayashi, Businessman]:
"It's not clear where the pesticide got in, but the biggest problem is that there weren't checks."

[Ayako Okuda, Office Worker]:
"China seems to have a lax attitude for safety, but people in Japan are only focused on costs and they didn't check for safety. Both sides (are at fault)."

The scandal is the latest in a string of disputes over the safety of Chinese products from toys to toothpaste. Earlier this month, ironically, the CCP declared that its campaign to ensure food and product safety was a complete success.
